If you own your home and you get certain social welfare payments, SEAI can pay up to €9,000 towards solar panels and a battery.
In many cases, that covers the full cost of the system.
This page explains who can get it, how much you can get, and what happens step by step. We have kept it as simple as we can. If you would rather have it as a printable guide, you can download our Enhanced Solar Grant Guide (PDF) and save it for later.
Who this is for
This is the SEAI Enhanced Solar PV Grant. It is a bigger grant than the standard one, and it is for homeowners who are getting certain Department of Social Protection payments.
We do most of the paperwork. You apply to SEAI, and we start work once they approve you.
Dial an Electrician Ltd. is a sister company of DAE Renewables Ltd. and is the registered installer named on your grant.
How much you can get
| Size of solar system | 2 kWp | 3 kWp | 4 kWp+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solar panels | €6,700 | €7,550 | €8,400 |
| Battery | €600 | €600 | €600 |
| Total grant | €7,300 | €8,150 | €9,000 |
The battery grant is €600 for a battery of 5kWh or larger. Without a battery, the most you can get is €8,400.
Can you get it?
Yes, if all of these are true:
- You own the home and you live in it
- Your home was built and occupied before 2025
- Your home has never had a solar grant before
- You get one of the payments listed below
That last point matters more than people expect. SEAI has confirmed that eligibility is linked to the homeowner. If the qualifying payment is received by somebody else in the house, rather than by the person who owns it, the application will not meet the criteria.
Which payments qualify
- Fuel Allowance (as part of the National Fuel Scheme)
- Working Family Payment
- One-Parent Family Payment
- Domiciliary Care Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance, if you live with the person you care for
- Jobseeker’s Allowance, for more than six months, with a child under seven
- Disability Allowance, for more than six months, with a child under seven
If you are not sure whether your payment counts, give us a ring and we will check it with you.
Before you apply
Have these ready before you start the online form:
- Your MPRN. This is the 11-digit number on your electricity bill, usually at the top right. It starts with 10.
- The year your home was built.
- Your email address.
- Your bank details (IBAN). See the note below about which account to use.
- The name of your social welfare payment.
What happens next
From saying yes to getting the grant usually takes 2 to 4 months.
- Get your quote. We visit your home and agree the system and the price with you.
- Apply to SEAI. You do this part. Go to mgen.seai.ie, choose Dial an Electrician Ltd. as your installer, and say which welfare payment you get.
- Wait for your Letter of Offer. SEAI emails it to you. Check that it names Dial an Electrician Ltd., then send it on to us. No work can start before this arrives.
- Before the work starts. We register your system with ESB Networks. This takes about four weeks.
- Installation day. We fit and test everything, and show you how it all works.
- BER check. An assessor visits after the work is done. We book this for you.
- Paperwork and payment. We send SEAI the paperwork. SEAI pays the grant about four to six weeks later.
What you pay
Your quote shows you three things: the full price, the grant, and anything left for you to pay. In many cases the grant covers the full cost, and there is nothing left to pay.
Which bank account to use
The application asks for bank details, because SEAI pays the grant into that account. Please check with us before you apply — we will tell you which account to use.
Good to know
- No work can start until you have your Letter of Offer.
- Everything must be finished within 8 months of your Letter of Offer.
- The BER visit takes about an hour. The assessor needs to see every room.
- SEAI may call out to check the work. Please let them in.
- Keep your invoice and certificates somewhere safe.

Common questions
Is this the same as the normal solar grant?
No. The standard grant is up to €1,800 for solar panels, plus €600 for a battery. This enhanced grant is much larger, but it is only for homeowners getting one of the qualifying welfare payments.
Do I have to pay anything up front?
We will go through the full cost and the grant with you at quote stage, so you know exactly where you stand before you apply. In many cases the grant covers the whole thing.
What if someone else in the house gets the payment?
Unfortunately that does not qualify. SEAI links eligibility to the homeowner, so the person who owns the home needs to be the one receiving the payment.
What is a BER assessment?
It is an energy rating for your home, a bit like the sticker on a fridge. An assessor visits after the work and looks at every room. It is required before SEAI will pay the grant, and we book it for you.
Can I still apply if I had a grant years ago?
Not if the home has already had a solar grant. The grant is only available once per home.
How long does it all take?
Usually two to four months from start to finish. The ESB Networks step alone takes around four weeks, so it is worth starting sooner rather than later.
